| Apr 11 MUVE Bear Cut Cleanup |
Frost Science’s Museum Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE) is a volunteer-based habitat restoration project whose goal is to engage local residents in restoring coastal environments that once thrived in Miami. Every month, MUVE hosts events to teach South Florida residents of all ages and backgrounds about the environmental stresses we face, then lets them get their hands dirty to make a difference. Volunteers leave behind a living legacy of native habitats that they can visit and enjoy in perpetuity.
Citizen scientists like Andrew Otazo take this mission and make outstanding advancements in their community. Seeing the state of Crandon Park’s Bear Cut Preserve, Andrew knew he needed to do something. With only garbage bags, gloves and a camera in hand, he ventured day after day into the mangrove forest and carried out 60-pound bags stuffed with garbage. To date, he’s collected over a ton of trash!
After hearing about Andrew’s endeavor, Frost Science knew it had to help. MUVE has partnered with Baynanza’s Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day to host a mangrove cleanup, and would love for you to join! If you’re 14 and older and are up to the challenge, register to join Frost Science, Andrew and other empowered citizen scientists on April 21, 2018! Deadline to register is April 14, 2018.

When science and literature collide, it’s poetry in motion.
That’s the premise behind “Planetary Poems,” a project created by O, Miami and Frost Science, in collaboration with Topos Graphics and The Library of Congress Poetry and Literature Center, as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival.
In an unforgettable evening, United States Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith will have her poetry animated inside the unique space of the Frost Planetarium. Designed by Topos Graphics, each animated poem will “constellate” against the night sky as Smith reads it.
Admission to Planetary Poems is $10 per person ($8 for Frost Science members). Tickets include beverages prior to the program (6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.). Program begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Join Frost Science as we work on several citizen science activities at the Virginia Key North Point restoration site including:
- Marine Debris Cleanup: Volunteers collect trash from the beach and log each item using Marine Debris Tracker, a free smartphone and tablet app.
- Biodiversity Monitoring: Volunteers observe newly planted trees throughout our restoration site as well as observing native wildlife. Observations may be logged with iNaturalist – another smartphone app.
- Invasive Plant Documentation and Removal: Invasive plants will be removed from the site to make way for native vegetation.
Taking place on the third Saturday of each month, MUVE Volunteer Workdays are excellent opportunities to make an immediate impact on the environment by investing your time in one of our several restoration projects. Volunteers must only commit to a single workday at a time but can choose to do so regularly.

We’ve got a new lineup of stars gracing the Frost Planetarium screen including Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bob Marley and Queen. (Please note: Laser Friday shows are not included in the Member Evening event—tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children.)
Admission to Member Evenings are free and only open to members and their guests. Pre-registration is requested but not required. All members must have a valid membership card and show a photo ID upon entrance. Only those listed on the membership account will be permitted into the event. Accounts with guest privileges will be allowed the appropriate number of guests to accompany the member. The museum closes to the general public at 5:30 p.m.

DeAnne Connolly Graham has worked in Miami’s tourism and hospitality industry for over 25 years. In April 2013 DeAnne created ROI Media Consultants Inc., which guides businesses with their media buys and marketing strategies to obtain the maximum return on investment. DeAnne believes in creating partnerships and strategic alliances rather than fearing competition, so she focuses on building a strong professional network through her extensive involvement with the community. DeAnne believes networking is a very effective marketing strategy in creating quality business relationships.
DeAnne is very active with a number of chambers and associations throughout South Florida that focus on tourism and hospitality. She serves on the Pillar Board of the Miami Beach Chamber and is co-chair of the Women’s Business Council. She also sits on the Board of the Miami Dade chapter of The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association and serves on the Miami Advisory Board for the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, which prepares a diverse population of high school students for post secondary education and careers in hospitality and tourism. Outside of business, DeAnne serves as Chair of the Ayuda Foundation, a Miami Beach non-profit that since 1977 has been providing low income families throughout Miami Dade with childcare services, teenage empowerment programs, family counseling services and elder care services.

| Apr 26 SEEKING THE ESSENCE: An "Author" Exhibit |
Local non-profit Saludarte Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health of youth and other socio-economic disadvantaged groups through the arts, announces 8-week run of Seeking the Essence, a unique exhibition featuring the works of award-winning author and illustrator Menena Cottin.
Menena Cottin has already touched the lives of many. She has written books, often categorized as children’s books, based on curiosities about things like: experiencing colors as a blind child, living in a world turned upside down and how reality is really a matter of perspective. Simple in their aesthetics, but profound and transformational in their messages, Menena Cottin’s books have been applauded internationally by the likes of the New York Times, The Bogota Post, The Indian Express and the School Library Journal’s Best Books for Children, and some have been translated into as many as 20 languages. A sensation in her native Venezuela, and throughout Latin America, now she looks to crossover into the U.S. market alongside curator Pedro Quintero with an experiential exhibition that promises to spark curiosity and empathy, while awakening the inner child in us all. |

Join Frost Science as we host our very own BioBlitz as part of the City Nature Challenge 2018! BioBlitz is a period of biological surveying that attempts to record all the living species within a designated area.
On April 28, volunteers will gather at Virginia Key North Point to record as many species as they can using the iNaturalist app. The goal is to upload the most amount of observations in an effort to generate useful data for conservation efforts. Scientists and experts will be on hand to give feedback and identify the uploaded photos. The city with the most uploaded observations will be announced May 4, 2018.
Over 60 cities around the globe are competing to see who can observe the most plants, animals, fungi and other organisms while engaging the greatest number of people. All observations made between April 27 – April 30, 2018 will count towards the competition, so we encourage you to make observations in the app wherever you may be! Download the iNaturalist app before you arrive.
