Da Vinci – Inventions
Investigate a series of interactive, life-size machines crafted from the codices of Leonardo da Vinci that brings to life his work as an inventor, artist, scientist and engineer.
Who was Leonardo da Vinci? Some say an artist or philosopher. Yet, others note his brilliance as an inventor and engineer.
The truth is, all of these answers are correct. Leonardo da Vinci was the ultimate Renaissance man, and his famous codices contained intricate details regarding inventions that were astonishingly ahead of his time.
Created with the assistance of the Museo Leonardo da Vinci – Rome, Italy, and a number of experts in Italy and France, Da Vinci – Inventions presented by Bank of America celebrates one of the most revered and dynamic minds of all time: Leonardo da Vinci. The exhibition features 16 compelling themed areas of da Vinci’s work, offering you an unmatched look inside the mind of a man who laid the groundwork for some of modern society’s most impactful inventions such as the helicopter, airplane, automobile, submarine, parachute and bicycle.
All of the inventions brought to life for Da Vinci – Inventions were crafted by Italian artisans, many using the same techniques and materials from the Renaissance period. Scouring more than 6,000 pages from da Vinci’s personal codices (notebooks), the artisans deciphered hidden clues, intentional mistakes and mirror-image writing that da Vinci employed to keep his works top secret. Then, they faithfully crafted interactive and life-size replicas of these machine inventions. These works include the first concepts of a car, bicycle, helicopter, glider, parachute, SCUBA, submarine, a forerunner to the modern military tank, and an ideal city, to name a few.
Suitable for all ages, this amazing exhibition provides a fascinating insight into not only the mind of a genius, but also into the fundamental scientific and artistic principles that he discovered. Da Vinci – Inventions is an inspiration for the whole family.
Highlights of the exhibition include:
- Large-scale, interactive machine inventions brought to life for the first time by modern-day artisans in Italy.
- Representations of Leonardo’s famous renaissance art, including “Virgin of the Rocks,” “The Annunciation” and the controversial “La Bella Principessa.”
- Animations telling the story behind the “Vitruvian Man,” “The Last Supper” and the Sforza horse sculpture.
- Touch-screen versions of da Vinci’s actual codices
Da Vinci – Inventions will be on view from Saturday, June 9, 2018 through Sunday, December 9, 2018 on Levels 2 and 3 in the museum’s West Wing. Admission to Da Vinci – Inventions is included in all museum admission tickets.
Da Vinci – Inventions is presented locally by Bank of America. The exhibition was developed by Grande Exhibitions, under the kind auspices of the Commune di Roma, Commune di Firenze and Citta Di Venezia.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden & The Sunflower Society invite all children to SUMMER ART CAMP 2018.
Ages 4-13 years old
Turn nature into art this summer. Artist and Designer Winsome Bolt will guide the students to build a series of international landmarks using both natural and man-made materials. Each child will contribute to the concept of creating a new perspective of existing monuments.
Art supplies are included. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the class.
Art Camp will be in the Banyan Ballroom and adjacent covered patio.
Children and their families are invited to Gallery Night to view the completed projects - Thursday, August 9th, 6-8 PM.
Drinks and snacks provided by KIND. Bring a picnic lunch for after class.
Photographs will be taken for future Garden promotions. Please advise if you object to using images of your children.

In this special live performance of the podcast Gastropod, co-hosts Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley will serve up a three-course feast for your eyes and ears, including a special guest appearance from Ricardo Trillos, chocolatier at Cao Chocolates, the first and only bean-to-bar chocolate shop in South Florida. From live experiments to interactive tastings, the evening will combine special guests and field recordings to reveal the history and science behind the food we eat every day.
Gastropod is the award-winning podcast that looks at food through the lens of science and history. Join Franci from 5:30-5:50 every Thursday. There will be a FREE guided meditation! Yoga from 6pm-7:15 ($10 Fee). This class has gentle flow that is geared toward those that want to slow down the revolutions of the mind. Class will be filled with attention to proper alignment that will allow you to slowly feel tension melting away. We will learn to use breathing exercises that activate relaxation and create more space in our body and mind. If you are new to yoga and have tightness, it is recommended you bring a block from home or cushion for our seated meditation. A few yoga mats are available. Come! Join us under the palms! You deserve this nourishing energy from the garden.

Kilu Horecki is a clinical herbalist trained in western herbalism, Chinese traditional medicine, and the ancient art of Ayurveda. Through his practice, which blends modern science with traditional techniques, Kilu helps individuals around the world to achieve lasting well-being through the use of herbal remedies and lifestyle optimization. He also educates about the current environment’s impact on one’s well-being. Kilu’s extensive clinical experience has led to the creation of a line of herbal products. The #ToxinTakeoverMiami continues as we dive deep into the thrilling world of poison and venom during this month’s Member Evening! On August 17, you’ll take a closer look at our largest special exhibition to date—The Power of Poison: From the Depths of the Sea to Your Own Backyard—before exploring the rest of Frost Science as the museum opens late just for members.*
Along with beating the crowds, you’ll get a private demonstration of “Stomach-Turning Toxins,” a special Spark of Science that takes a look at the bacteria, viruses and parasites that can make their way into what we eat. Afterwards, join us for a stargazing session on the rooftop terrace starting at 8:00 p.m. (weather permitting).
Members will have access to most museum exhibitions in addition to receiving a 20% discount at the Science Store until 9:00 p.m.
Special Laser Friday Discount:
Make it a total experience by booking a laser show before they sell out! This summer, we’re taking 20% off Laser Fridays on the third Friday of every month exclusively for members. We’ve also got a new lineup of shows gracing the Frost Planetarium screen including Queen, The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Stranger Things (Please note: Laser Friday shows are not included in the Member Evening event—you may purchase your tickets online prior to the event).

Hot Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga regulates the flow of energy in the body. It is a more meditative approach with a physical focus much deeper than Yang like practices. Here the practitioner is trying to access the deeper tissues such as the connective tissue and fascia and many of the postures, that we hold for longer periods of time, focus on areas that encompass a joint (hips, sacrum, spine). Yin yoga is a wonderful way to maintain the flexibility of the body, to deepen the connection with the breath and train the mind to remain present through the entire practice. This class is heated. All levels welcome.
